This chest is made of white pine with reddish brown stain meant to approximate the color of the original blanket chest made by Brother Gilbert Avery, of the Shaker New Lebanon community, in April 1837.
The chest sides & ends are held together with dovetails.
The plinth, which raises the chest off the floor, also has dovetailed corners, as well as convex cutouts .
Inside, the chest has a lidded till box with a till drawer beneath it. The till drawer displays a varnished cherry wood front.
The lid of the chest has tongue-and-groove (breadboard) molding on each end.
The maple drawer knobs were turned in my shop to emulate the originals.
Both the upper chest and lower outside drawer are fitted with locks (& matching keys). The key escutcheons are made of bone, same as the original chest.
This chest is as close to the original as you can get, in every way.
